The Cacao Miracle

I am fascinated with Organic Raw Cacao ever since I have been using it in my facials and see my beautiful clients GLOW! Theobroma Cacao is its genus name and means "food of the gods"  The internal medicinal benefits seem to be just as riveting as the topical benefits.  It is a fruit and yields  20-30 seeds/beans per pod.  It's history dates back to 1900-900 BC and evidence of cacao was found in ceramic vessels found off the coast of Veracruz, Mexico. It is considered medicine and has the highest dose of anti- oxidants on the ORAC   ( this measures daily doses allowed ) Its higher than blueberries by a lot!  I want to write about the superpowers of this anti-oxidant powerhouse.  Cacao helps protect cells from oxidation and aging.  Oxidation is a process in which chemical substances change because of the loss of electrons due to being oxidized.  Think of fruit and how it changes when its left out too long OR the rusting of metal. Our skin has similar reactions.  In skin care we call it free radical damage and it is caused by many things.   What happens in free radical damage is our cells which are normally stable get an electron taken from their outer shell from environmental conditions like sunburn and pollution etc.  This causes the cell to act erratic and causes a chain reaction damaging other cells around it. The reason I am explaining this is because skincare is created to support the skin cells in this battle . Cacao has iron, selenium, manganese, omega 6 fatty acids, and  vitamin C.   Cacao improves vascular health triggering nutrient delivery and supports the skins natural healing ability.  Its a potent anti- inflammatory.  Inflammation is our bodies protection from damage, but chronic inflammation isn't good. It's taxing on the cells and weakens them, making it hard for them to function with integrity.  Calming and treating inflamed skin with Cacao helps deliver healing nutrients to the skin.  I also specialize in Nutritional Therapy with a focus on acne and stress which is super helpful when dealing with inflammation.  Cacao protects and blocks harmful free radicals.   I never knew going into the skincare industry would be so fascinating and allow me to continually learn especially about plants!   I use a few different organic luxury Cacao products in my facials and everyone experiences the magic of cacao.  It is good for all skin types in my facial.   People always ask me if I would ever make my own products. I always say NO, I leave it to the experts like Dr.Alkaitis and Josh Rosebrook the TOP leaders in Organic Skincare. After my short schooling (6 months) attending the Cinta Aveda Institute I was super lucky to join the Esthetician team at International Orange in SF which I worked for 8 years previous as a massage therapist.  I consider those estheticians the Black ops of Skincare and I mean that as the highest compliment.  In EVERY SINGLE facial I perform I see glowing skin, resonating life and beauty and health after.  Its like a miracle happens with Cacao, I do a little magic to it and add crazy ingredients like asparagus and brussels sprouts and adaptogens to name a FEW organic ingredients. I am so thrilled to have found the medicine of cacao and look forward to finding more ways internally to celebrate its magic.  Come get a facial!!!! Its amazing! Be kind to yourself, Christy

Magical Times in Lake Tahoe!

Well folks I did it.  I quit my day job and am working full speed ahead at Aloeswood Beauty!  This pic sums up how I feel about it.   My friend dared me to run past these two hotties and jump in ... and so i did it and she captured it.  ( thanks Chapri) The weekend in Tahoe was the beginning of my new slowed down life.  Its not that I want to rest all day, nope.  I want to be HEALTHY and what that means to me is sweat in the am, do yoga, breathe, make my own meals, journal... THEN WORK.... thats it for now... I also want to travel a bit more and be in nature a lot more.   I am in awe that I did it, and honestly I have felt really really calm about it ... but today Im a tiny bit nervous...Its day 4 . In my gut I know its the right thing to do... so I just want to TRUST THE UNIVERSE.  So thats what I'm cooking to do.  Once I get a little more confident teaching yoga Im gonna have some amazing yoga classes up and running at the MAcarthur Annex near Macarthur BART and i want to teach small educational classes about the bodies systems and how they work, and how to play nice with them.  I think thats it for now.  Im going to go craft up some quiches. Stay wild, dream, and love yourself, Christy

Maui Vacation

MAUI WOWEE!

I was fortunate enough to go to Maui for a week! a week ago.  I have been looking forward to this since March and it was just the vacation i needed.  I LOVE vacations where i get to lay around and have no agenda.  When i found this 1933  pool on our little gated place i was in heaven.   I played here and dipped in the pool for hours, reading, taking pics, doing nothing.   Very different from my normal life back in Oakland.  In 2 weeks my working life will change dramatically.  I luckily got to lay around resting before the change happens.  The change is a great one.  I have been a teacher at Aveda for 4 yrs and I love my job, BUT, Aloeswood is calling. and i  have been WAITING and WORKING 2 jobs for 2 + years full time for THIS very moment and i am going to appreciate every second that goes into creating my little dream.  So Maui gave me the time to drift away, do nothing and dream as much as I can right now.... its hard to think and be creative when your busy with work so this was a much needed breather.  My main objective to to be healthy, because , without that i cannot live a vibrant life... i cannot work etc..  What that means is everyday i will spend my mornings sweating, breathing, stretching and journaling, AND cooking my own food and being grateful!   EVERY DAY!!!!!!! can you believe it!  I will soon bring all of this to the Annex and teach morning yoga/meditation classes that will be gentle but have purpose.  Im going to put my Christy twist on them and have a mini facial component and some sort of  beautiful healthy drink offering as well.  I CANT WAIT.  2 more weeks and then i take a mini reboot weekend with a girlfriend THEN August is MINE to create.   Aloeswood is amazing and growing.  I never knew it would be after all these years that my dream and passion are being expressed so fully.   Hold onto your dreams everyone, never let go. Peace In and out Christy

adaptogens and tonics

I am a believer of good nutrition and quality ingredients.  I need my health to grow and glow.  Many years ago I discovered Damiana, a dried leaf that serves to uplift the spirit, relax the nervous system, and improve digestion.  I make a tea tonic with it.  I add it to my hibiscus, nettles, and red raspberry leaf tea.  Served cold it is VERY refreshing.  Digestion is a huge part of energy, happiness and health.  These are delicious balls of health and here are some basics to put in them: recently i made this little batch of goodies for the School I teach at and they were a hit!  The tea tonic is served and sold at ALOESWOOD!   Heres the recipe: Organic ingredients are always higher vibration Mejool Dates, Sunflower butter, raw cacao powder, olive oil, adaptogens, pecans, and roll in coconut flakes and bee pollen sprinkles.  These are AMAZing! and give you a healthy snack. Adaptogens are plants that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance.  They are AMAZING and they work.  you can put them in anything and normally come in powder form.  Companies like Four Sigmatic and Sunpotion sell high quality products.   I am heading to Hawaii in a couple weeks and will create the next phase of Aloeswood Beauty and share it with you.   In the meantime, be healthy and stay strong. xo Christy
